Cominotto Terrazzo in sustainable school buildings

Today, schools are consciously choosing sustainable, low-maintenance materials. In three projects, we demonstrate how Cominotto Terrazzo plays a key role in this.

1. ENCORA - RENOVATION OF THE REAR BUILDING & NEW CONSTRUCTION OF THE FRONT BUILDING

Van Aerdtstraat Antwerpen.

Schools today face a dual challenge: preserving existing buildings while meeting contemporary standards for comfort, sustainability, and maintenance.

The redevelopment of the ENCORA Campus in Antwerp strikes a perfect balance.

Design: Architecten Cuypers Q architecten

“The site of the adult education school is being redeveloped in phases, respecting its historical identity and with a focus on sustainability. The campus is located within a city block and consists of several buildings arranged around a central courtyard.
In the first phase, the three rear buildings were renovated, including the repair of floors and walls, replacement of joinery, restoration of staircases using Cominotto Terrazzo Cemento and tiling, renewal of technical installations, and asbestos removal. Part of the courtyard was also paved and refreshed.
The second phase involves the reconstruction of the nine townhouses on the street side. The historic facades will be preserved and restored, while a compact new volume will be built behind them that aligns with the existing grid of the original development.”

2. Sint Rombouts College in Mechelen also chose to work with Cominotto Terrazzo

Commissioned by Vandezande Construct and in collaboration with the architectural firm Catherine de Bie Architecten.

The stairs were constructed using Cominotto Terrazzo Cemento in the color “Cargrey.” The design features individually mitered risers without an overhang. A staircase design offering maximum safety and durability.

The steps, with a thickness of 4 cm, were equipped with:
- synthetic rubber anti-slip
- integrated water stop

3. De Octopus – Deurne

Yet another of the many schools choosing our sustainable product, Cominotto Terrazzo!

Commissioned by AG Vespa and in collaboration with Brebuild and Tom Thys Architects, Cominotto NV contributed to this beautiful project.

We quote AG VESPA:
“AG Vespa builds many public buildings for the city of Antwerp: schools, police stations, daycare centers, museums, … Sustainability and strong architecture are central. Commissioned by Stedelijk Onderwijs Antwerpen, we are renovating the existing school buildings of the Stedelijk Lyceum Waterbaan and De Cirkel preschool in Deurne and expanding the school into the dual-track elementary school ‘De Octopus’. The buildings are located in the inner area of the block formed by Herentalsebaan, Sint-Rochusstraat, Korte Sint-Rochusstraat, and Waterbaan.”
